Gerbil as a Gift Done Smart, With a Pair, a Tank and the Law
A gerbil as a gift can work, but not as one animal and not everywhere. Here’s what the RSPCA, ASPCA and state rules say before you give one.

π¨ Vet Now: If a gerbil you’ve just received has missing or bleeding tail skin, a stuck or limp leg, bite wounds or hard breathing, call a vet experienced with gerbils now. Don’t wait, and don’t try to treat it at home.
A gerbil can be a gift, but only if you do this first
A Mongolian gerbil can be a gift, but only for a household that asked for gerbils, can care for them, and lives where they’re legal. It’s also never one gerbil: gerbils need a same-sex pair.
If you’re deciding whether to give gerbils
Start with whether the person is ready, then the law where they live.
If a child asked for one
Gerbils are quick and fragile, so an adult must carry the responsibility. Advice on a child’s age varies widely, and the age section shows each source.
If gerbils just arrived
Read the Vet Now box above first, then the handling and setup sections. Don’t lift a gerbil by its tail.
π©Ί Health Note: This is general information, not a substitute for an exam by a vet experienced with gerbils. Gerbils can lose the skin of the tail if it is grabbed, and can be hurt by rough handling or falls. Any injury, bleeding, limping or hard breathing needs a vet; if you don’t have an exotics vet yet, find one before you need one.
Is a gerbil a good gift? What the welfare groups say
A Mongolian gerbil is a good gift only if the recipient asked for gerbils and can care for them, you give a same-sex pair, and gerbils are legal where they live.
When a gerbil gift can work
The ASPCA’s position on pets as gifts is conditional; it is general policy, not gerbil research.
| Works when | Doesn’t work when | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient asked for gerbils and has time | Surprise for a busy household | ASPCA |
| Parents ready to take over (under 12) | Child expected to cope alone | ASPCA; Omlet |
| A same-sex pair, together | One gerbil alone | RSPCA |
π Outdated Advice: Some older pages, VCA’s included, say to house gerbils singly. The RSPCA says never alone: see why one gerbil is never the gift.
Where the gerbils should come from
The ASPCA says to use shelters, rescues, friends, family or responsible breeders.
Christmas, birthdays and busy weeks
The ASPCA says the recipient needs a free schedule to help a pet settle in, especially at busy holiday times.
Check this first: gerbils are banned in California and Hawaii
California and Hawaii both restrict gerbils, with no exception for the pet Mongolian gerbil, so a gift there lands on the person receiving it.

California: restricted species rules
California’s restricted species regulation lists gerbils and makes it unlawful to import, transport or possess them without a department permit. Cities and counties can add their own rules.
Hawaii: prohibited for private individuals
Hawaii’s prohibited-animal guidance lists gerbils as prohibited from entry or possession by private individuals.
Other states and countries
We haven’t checked every jurisdiction’s gerbil law. Before you buy, confirm with the local wildlife or agriculture agency.
β Do This: Before you buy, confirm with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife or the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity.
Who can look after gerbils? Age, handling and noise
These facts cover the Mongolian gerbil, and sources disagree on a child’s age.
What age is right? Five sources, five answers
| Source | Says |
|---|---|
| SPCA Tampa Bay | 5 and up, supervised |
| Humane World | 8 and up |
| VCA | Over 10 |
| Omlet | 11 or 12 still need supervision |
| PDSA | Small children shouldn’t pick up |
Handling: scoop, never lift by the tail
If tail skin comes off or a leg is hurt, call a vet experienced with gerbils now.

Gerbils can be nervous about being picked up. Cup both hands, scoop, and hold the gerbil low over a flat surface, as PDSA’s guidance on holding gerbils describes. Never lift by the tail: the RSPCA says the skin and hair can shed.
Day or night? Where the tank goes
The RSPCA calls gerbils generally diurnal; VCA calls them nocturnal and says they run wheels at night. Humane World suggests a room where no one sleeps.
A gift gerbil is a pair, a tank and deep bedding
Mongolian gerbils arrive as a pair, into a ready tank.
Same-sex littermates, not a mixed pair
The RSPCA says gerbils need other gerbils and should live in same-sex pairs formed early, ideally young littermates. Because established groups are unlikely to accept new animals, buy the pair together.
How big a tank? Sources disagree
Sources disagree; how big a tank two gerbils need compares them.
| Source | For two gerbils |
|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual | About 10 gallons |
| Humane World | 20 gallons minimum |
| Wood Green | 100 Γ 50 Γ 50 cm |
Bedding depth: 20β30 cm
The RSPCA recommends 20β30 cm in a tank about 50 cm high; Wood Green says 20β25 cm. See what a gerbil tank setup for a pair involves.
What to give instead of a live gerbil, and what setup costs
For an undecided household, give the setup first and the Mongolian gerbils later.
Give the setup first, the gerbils second
Per the RSPCA’s housing guidance, a ready setup includes:
- A dark nest box with several entrances, plus three more hiding places
- Gnaw sticks, cardboard tubes and a rough stone
- An optional axle-free wheel, large and solid
For the tank, see a tank that leaves room to dig.
If they already have gerbils
For bedding, the RSPCA suggests rough woodchips and hay, Merck favors paper, and sources split on aspen.
What the setup costs
Humane World says the setup is the main expense, with small ongoing costs. We list no prices; figures should come from receipts.
How long do gerbils live? What to tell a child
Mongolian gerbils live roughly 2β5 years, depending on the source.
The lifespan range, by source
- Merck Veterinary Manual: 2β3 years
- RSPCA: up to 3β4 years, some longer
- Humane World: 3β4 years
- SPCA Tampa Bay: 3β5 years
Some gerbils live longer, but plan for the shorter end.
Talking to a child before it happens
VCA advises telling children the lifespan at the start, so a sudden death isn’t a shock. Short lives are part of keeping gerbils; saying so early is kind. If a gerbil seems unwell, call a vet experienced with gerbils.
Quick answers about giving a gerbil as a gift
1. Is a gerbil a good gift for a child?
A gerbil as a gift works for an older child only if an adult takes responsibility and gives two gerbils, not one.
2. What age should a child be to have a gerbil?
For a gerbil as a gift, age advice ranges from 5 supervised (SPCA Tampa Bay) to 8 (Humane World) to over 10 (VCA).
3. Can I give someone just one gerbil?
A single gerbil is the wrong gerbil gift: the RSPCA says gerbils should never be kept alone, so give a same-sex pair.
4. Is it illegal to own a gerbil in California?
A gerbil as a gift is not allowed where gerbils are banned: California and Hawaii. Check your agency before buying.
5. How long do gerbils live?
A gerbil as a gift means 2β3 years per Merck, up to 3β4 per RSPCA, so tell any child it will be short. If a gerbil seems unwell, call a vet experienced with gerbils.
6. How much does it cost to set up for two gerbils?
A gerbil as a gift costs most at the start: tank, deep bedding, hides, wheel and chews, so budget for the setup first.
7. Do gerbils like being held?
PDSA says gerbils can be nervous about being picked up; with a gerbil as a gift, scoop with cupped hands, never by the tail. If tail skin slips or a leg is hurt, call a vet experienced with gerbils now.
8. Are gerbils awake in the day or at night?
Sources differ on whether a gerbil as a gift is awake by day: RSPCA says mostly diurnal, VCA mostly nocturnal, so plan for bedroom noise.
9. What can I give instead of a live gerbil?
Instead of a gerbil as a gift, give the setup first: a tank, deep bedding, hides and chews, then the pair later.
10. Is it okay to give a gerbil at Christmas or for a birthday?
ASPCA says gift pets only to people showing sustained interest; a gerbil as a gift in busy holiday weeks needs a free schedule.
Your next step before you give a gerbil
This week, confirm gerbils are legal where the recipient lives. Then choose between a same-sex pair with a ready tank, or the setup first and the gerbils later. Either way, make sure a household has said yes to a few years of daily care.
