The Best Rabbit Pen for Your Space, and How to Size It Right
The best rabbit pen depends on whose guidance you follow. Against a wall, 11 x-pen panels cover the PDSA’s 10×6 ft minimum; here’s every layout.

The short answer: one pen or two?
Most rabbit owners need one tall metal exercise pen (x-pen) at minimum. If you follow UK welfare guidance, you need two pens joined together. Which applies depends on how much running time your rabbit gets outside the pen.
If you follow US guidance (HRS)
One 8-panel pen with 24-inch panels makes a 16-square-foot square. That clears the House Rabbit Society’s 8-square-foot enclosure guideline, as long as your rabbit also gets 24 square feet of exercise space for at least 5 hours daily.
If you follow UK guidance (RWAF/PDSA)
UK groups want roughly 60–65 square feet available all day. That means two pens joined, or one pen plus a wall — which is why a hutch alone falls short.

How big should a rabbit pen be?
It depends on which standard you follow, and the two main ones measure different things.

| Standard | Minimum (1–2 rabbits) | When it applies | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| House Rabbit Society (US) | 8 sq ft enclosure + 24 sq ft exercise space | Exercise 5+ hours daily | Home should be 4–6× your rabbit’s stretched-out size |
| RWAF (UK) | 3m × 2m × 1m high | At all times | One continuous block; upper hutch floors don’t count |
| PDSA (UK) | 10ft × 6ft × 3ft | At all times | Called an “absolute minimum” |
Sources: HRS, RWAF, PDSA — checked October 2026.
HRS: home base plus daily exercise
The House Rabbit Society’s housing guidance treats the pen as a home base, with free-run time on top of it.
RWAF and PDSA: 3m x 2m x 1m, all the time
The RWAF’s space recommendations describe the permanent living space for a pair. In feet, that’s about 9’10” × 6’7″.
Bigger breeds and single rabbits
PDSA says the right size depends on your rabbit, so giant breeds need more than the minimum. RWAF says a single rabbit still needs the same space as two. You can compare both systems in our US vs UK rabbit space guide.
How many x-pen panels you actually need
Standard x-pens use 24-inch-wide panels, so every 2 feet of wall is one panel.

| Target | Layout | 24″ panels | Floor area | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HRS home base | Square, 4×4 ft | 8 (one pen) | 16 sq ft | Daily free-run rabbits |
| HRS home base | Octagon | 8 (one pen) | ~19 sq ft | A little more room |
| PDSA 10×6 ft | Free-standing | 16 (two pens) | 60 sq ft | Open rooms |
| PDSA 10×6 ft | Long side on a wall | 11 | 60 sq ft | Renters, small spaces |
| RWAF 3m×2m (rounds to 10×8 ft) | Free-standing | 18 | 80 sq ft | Full UK minimum |
| RWAF 3m×2m | Against a 10-ft wall | 13 | 80 sq ft | UK minimum, fewer panels |
📊 Spec: Calculated from MidWest’s listed 8-panel, 24-inch-wide pen design (16 linear feet). The octagon figure uses the regular-octagon area formula, and perimeters round up to whole panels.
The 16-foot pen (one box)
Eight panels make 16 feet of wall. Set up as a square, that’s 16 square feet; as an octagon, about 19.
Using a wall to save panels
A wall replaces one side, so the PDSA’s 10ft × 6ft minimum drops from 16 panels to 11.
Hitting the full UK footprint
RWAF wants one continuous block, so joined pens must open into a single space, not two linked boxes. MidWest says its panels aren’t designed to be detached. Buy whole pens and use any spare panels to lengthen the space.
How tall should a rabbit pen be?
Respected sources set different minimums, so here is the range with each source attached.
What the guidance says
- 30 inches: the San Diego House Rabbit Society chapter’s adoption minimum for an x-pen.
- 4 feet: the Merck Veterinary Manual’s rabbit housing page, for pen sides that stop jumping out.
- 1 metre: RWAF’s enclosure height, so rabbits can stand and binky. An open-top pen has no ceiling, so this is about headroom, not wall height.
Our practical default is 36 inches: above the 30-inch minimum, with taller pens available for jumpers.
Small jumpers vs giant breeds
If your rabbit has cleared a wall once, assume it will again, and go taller or add a lid. Giant breeds stand taller, so check that the walls clear their full upright height.
Tops, anchors and bar gaps
Check that a small rabbit can’t fit its head between the bars. If the pen shifts on a smooth floor, set it on a rug or brace it against furniture.
The best rabbit pens for each setup
Every pick below is at least 30 inches tall and made of metal or rabbit-specific mesh. We compared manufacturer dimensions against HRS, RWAF, and PDSA figures. These pens were not hands-on tested.
| Pick | Height | One unit covers | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| MidWest 8-panel exercise pen | 24″–48″ (choose 36″) | 16 sq ft square | Best overall home base |
| Amazon Basics octagonal metal pen | Includes 30″ and 42″ | 16 sq ft square | Budget metal pen |
| Two matching 8-panel pens | Match heights | 60 sq ft (10×6 ft) | Meeting UK guidance |
| Omlet Zippi Rabbit Playpen (double height) | 3’2″ | 4’9″ × 3’2″ (starter pack) | Supervised play add-on |
Are dog pens safe for rabbits?
Most x-pens are sold for dogs. They work as rabbit housing when they’re all metal and tall enough.
Plastic and supervised-only pens
Some rabbits chew plastic play yards, so those suit non-chewers only. Omlet says the Zippi playpen is for supervised exercise, so it isn’t a 24/7 home.
Set up the pen so your rabbit’s feet stay healthy
A pen has no floor of its own, so what’s under it matters as much as the walls.
Floors: grip, not wire
The House Rabbit Society warns that wire cage floors are dangerous for rabbit feet. On carpet, the Rabbit.org Foundation’s pen guide suggests linoleum or a chair mat underneath; on slick floors, add washable rugs.
🔄 Outdated Advice: Merck’s owner guide still says wire floors keep cages cleaner. Current HRS guidance calls them dangerous for feet, so choose solid, grippy flooring. If your rabbit’s heels look sore, book a rabbit-savvy vet.
What goes inside the pen
- A litter box
- A hidey box with two openings, so your rabbit never feels trapped
- A soft rug or towel, plus something safe to chew

Pens and claims that don’t meet the guidance
If you bought one of these, you don’t need to start over. Most fixes cost one more pen.
The “6 square feet” myth
At least one popular roundup says RWAF and RSPCA recommend 6 square feet. In fact, RWAF’s minimum for a pair is 3m × 2m.
🔄 Outdated Advice: “6 sq ft is enough.” Current guidance runs from 8 sq ft plus daily exercise (HRS) to about 60–65 sq ft at all times (RWAF, PDSA).
Short pens and supervised-only pens
Pens 24 inches or lower sit below the 30-inch adoption minimum. A too-small cage isn’t wasted, though: leave it open inside the pen as a sleeping spot.
Outdoor pens without a roof
Amazon Basics says not to leave pets unattended outdoors in its pen, and Omlet says its playpen is for supervised use. Outdoor rabbits need roofed housing — see our hutch vs pen comparison.
Frequently asked questions
1. What is the best rabbit pen?
For most homes, the best rabbit pen is a metal 8-panel x-pen with 24-inch-wide panels, about 36 inches tall.
2. How big should a rabbit pen be?
A rabbit pen needs at least 8 sq ft plus daily exercise space (HRS), or about 60–65 sq ft at all times (RWAF, PDSA).
3. Is a 4×4 rabbit pen big enough?
A 4×4 rabbit pen gives 16 sq ft. That meets HRS home-base guidance with daily exercise, but not the UK full-time minimum.
4. How tall should a rabbit pen be?
Sources range from 30 inches to 4 feet. A 36-inch rabbit pen suits most rabbits; jumpers need taller walls or a lid.
5. Can a rabbit live in a rabbit pen full-time?
Only if the rabbit pen meets the UK minimum: one continuous 3m × 2m space, available at all times.
6. How many panels does a rabbit pen for two rabbits need?
A 10×6 ft rabbit pen takes 16 panels free-standing, or 11 with one long side against a wall.
7. Are dog exercise pens safe as a rabbit pen?
Yes. A dog x-pen works as a rabbit pen when it’s all metal and at least 30 inches tall.
8. Does a rabbit pen need a floor?
A rabbit pen needs no built-in floor, but it needs solid, grippy flooring underneath. Avoid wire, which HRS calls dangerous for feet.
9. Are plastic rabbit pens OK?
Plastic rabbit pens suit rabbits that don’t chew. Some rabbits chew plastic play yards, so switch to metal if yours does.
10. Can I use a rabbit pen outdoors?
Not unattended. Amazon Basics and Omlet both limit unattended use of their pens; outdoor rabbits need roofed housing.
Your next step
Start with one 36-inch, 8-panel metal pen, and give your rabbit daily free-run time; that meets US guidance. To meet the UK standard, add a second pen and lay out a 10×6 ft space, or use 11 panels against a wall. Either way, put grippy flooring underneath and a two-exit hideaway inside.
