Choosing the Best Gerbil Wheel When Sources Disagree
Best gerbil wheel? Listed sizes run from 5.5 to 11.6 inches, and the sources don’t agree on which one a gerbil needs.

Why “gerbil wheel” on the box isn’t enough
A “gerbil” label is not a size standard. Wheels sold for gerbils are listed anywhere from 5.5 to 11.6 inches, and the welfare sources below don’t agree on which is right.
Where to start: choosing a first wheel, read the size section; already own one, jump to the posture check; tail or foot injury, go straight to the last section.
This guide covers Mongolian gerbils, the species the Merck Veterinary Manual’s gerbil profile identifies as the usual pet gerbil. Hamster, mouse and rat wheel advice doesn’t transfer, so we use gerbil sources only. Buying the box wheel is common and fixable, and wheel size shapes the tank, so see our complete gerbil tank setup for a pair.
🩺 Health Note: This is general information, not a substitute for an exam by a vet experienced with gerbils. A gerbil with a tail injury or sore feet, or one that may have swallowed pieces of a wheel, should be seen by a vet experienced with gerbils. If you don’t have an exotics vet yet, find one before you need one.
What size wheel does a gerbil actually need?
Sources agree on a large wheel with no gaps for the tail, but not on the wheel diameter.

| Source | Type | Size it gives | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSPCA | Welfare charity | Large, rat-style | Solid, axle-free; no figure given |
| American Gerbil Society | Species society | 8 inches | Solid plastic or metal mesh |
| Omlet, Chewy | Retailers | 7–8 inches | Both sell wheels |
| Gerbil Care UK | Keeper-run site | 28 cm minimum (about 11 in) | Not a welfare body |
The 7–8 inch camp
Three sources land on about 18–20 cm.
The RSPCA standard
The RSPCA’s gerbil guidance wants a good-quality, large-diameter wheel, solid, axle-free and ideally non-slip.
The 28 cm keeper position
Gerbil Care UK says 28 cm keeps a gerbil’s back flat. Treat it as keepers’ experience, not a welfare standard.
🔄 Outdated Advice: “Any wheel labelled for gerbils fits.” Listed sizes under 7 inches fall below every figure above, so check the diameter, not the label.
How to tell if the wheel is too small
Whichever number you trust, your gerbil’s posture shows whether the wheel works.
The back-posture check
Chewy’s guidance and Gerbil Care UK use the same test: the back should stay flat while running, not arched. Film your gerbil from the side to check.
Measuring the real diameter
Hold a ruler across the running track and compare it with the box.
Will it fit your tank?
Add the stand height to the diameter and compare it with your tank’s height. Our guide to gerbil tank size for a pair covers dimensions.
⚠️ Watch Out: With parents and pups together, the American Gerbil Society says to probably remove the wheel, because a pup can be thrown out as it spins.
Why hamster wheels and rungs are a problem
Can gerbils use hamster wheels? Not ones with rungs or slats: the Merck Veterinary Manual warns slats can catch a gerbil’s feet or delicate tail, so look for a solid, gap-free track.

Rungs and slats
Omlet notes a tail caught between rungs can swell and become infected.
🔍 Why It Works: A solid track leaves no gap for a thin tail to slip into as the wheel turns.
Mesh vs solid
The American Gerbil Society accepts metal mesh if welds are checked for sharp points, while Chewy advises avoiding wire surfaces.
The plastic question
The American Gerbil Society accepts solid plastic, but the RSPCA says to avoid plastic objects because gerbils gnaw them, and Wodent’s maker doesn’t recommend its plastic wheel for gerbils.

Wheels worth considering, by listed size
These are maker and retailer listed sizes, not our measurements, and we haven’t tested any wheel.
| Wheel | Listed size | Label says | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comfort Wheel, small | 5.5 in | Hamsters, gerbils, mice | Plastic and wire; below every figure above |
| Kaytee Silent Spinner, Regular | 6.5 in | Hamsters, gerbils | Plastic; below the 7–8 inch camp |
| Full Cheeks | 8 in (20.3 cm) | Hamsters, gerbils, mice | Plastic and steel; fits the 7–8 inch camp |
| Niteangel Wooden (L) | 11.6 in | Syrian hamsters, gerbils | Wood, 3.7 in track; needs a tall tank |
| Trixie Wooden | 28 cm | Hamsters, degus | Untreated wood, cork surface; not sold for gerbils |

Setting the wheel up in a deep-bedding tank
Once you have a wheel, the setup decides whether your gerbils use it.
Free-standing vs bar-mounted
Chewy notes wheels come free-standing or cage-mounted. A glass tank has no bars, so the stand matters.
Keeping it quiet
Makers advertise ball bearings for low noise, and Niteangel cites about 40 dB. We haven’t tested any wheel, and buyer reviews of wooden wheels mention wobble that adds noise.
Wheel height and deep bedding
One buyer review says a gerbil’s wheel kept getting buried in bedding until they added a platform. See how deep gerbil bedding should be and keep the base clear.
Tail, feet and chewing: when to call a vet
If your gerbil has a tail injury or sore feet, or may have swallowed wheel pieces, contact a vet experienced with gerbils.
Tail injuries
Gerbil tails are fragile, per the Merck Veterinary Manual, so a tail caught in a wheel needs a vet, not home treatment.
Sore feet
The RSPCA says to ask a vet if gerbils develop sore feet from a wheel, and to remove the wheel meanwhile.
Chewed plastic or wood
Small Pet Select warns swallowed plastic can damage the gut. If you think your gerbil swallowed pieces, call a vet experienced with gerbils.
Frequently asked questions
1. What size gerbil wheel is best?
Sources disagree: 7–8 inches (retailers, American Gerbil Society), a large rat-style gerbil wheel (RSPCA), 28 cm (UK keepers). Check your gerbil’s back posture.
2. Do gerbils need a wheel?
The RSPCA lists a running wheel for gerbil exercise, but not as the only enrichment; a good gerbil wheel is solid, axle-free and large.
3. Are hamster wheels safe for gerbils?
Not with rungs or slats. A hamster wheel can catch a gerbil’s feet or tail; choose a solid-track gerbil wheel instead.
4. Is a plastic gerbil wheel safe?
Sources split: the American Gerbil Society accepts solid plastic, while the RSPCA says gerbils gnaw plastic objects. Watch your gerbil wheel for chew marks.
5. Is a mesh gerbil wheel safe?
The American Gerbil Society allows metal mesh if you check welds for sharp points, while Chewy advises avoiding wire surfaces on a gerbil wheel.
6. How do I know a gerbil wheel is too small?
If your gerbil’s back arches while running, the gerbil wheel is too small. Filming from the side makes it easy to check.
7. Can a gerbil’s tail get caught in a wheel?
Yes, in wheels with rungs or gaps; gerbil tails are fragile, so choose a solid gerbil wheel. Contact a vet experienced with gerbils after any tail injury.
8. Will a large gerbil wheel fit my tank?
Check stand height against tank height first. A large gerbil wheel needs a tall tank, and our tank size guide covers dimensions.
9. Why is my gerbil wheel noisy?
Makers claim ball bearings reduce noise, but we haven’t tested any gerbil wheel; reviews mention wobble that can make even wooden wheels loud.
10. Should I remove the gerbil wheel if pups are present?
The American Gerbil Society says to probably remove the gerbil wheel when parents share a cage with pups, which can be thrown out.
Your next step
Tonight, film your gerbils from the side and check their backs. Then compare the wheel and stand height with your tank. Pick a solid, gap-free wheel that passes the posture check, whichever size source you trust.
