Is a 40-gallon breeder big enough for a hamster?

Syrian, dwarf or Robo, a 40-gallon breeder fits each differently. At 16.94 in tall it clears Woodgreen’s dwarf height and sits 2.7 in under the Syrian one.

A 40-gallon breeder gives a hamster less floor than UK welfare charities ask for: the Aqueon model is 36.19 × 18.25 inches outside the glass on Petco’s listing, about 660 square inches, against a minimum of 100 × 50 cm (775 square inches). For dwarf species and Roborovskis that is a near miss you can work with, while a Syrian or Chinese hamster also runs short of height and wheel room.

Each gap is set out below in inches, followed by what to change inside the tank and what to look for if you size up.

About 660 square inches, before the glass

The tank misses the 100 × 50 cm rectangle in both directions, so no layout inside it closes the gap. A 100 cm floor is 39.4 inches long, and the Aqueon 40 breeder’s listed length is 36.19 inches, 3.2 inches (8.1 cm) short. Its 18.25-inch width falls 1.4 inches (3.6 cm) short of 50 cm.

Overhead comparison of a 40 gallon breeder aquarium floor and a larger 100 x 50 cm hamster enclosure, showing that the breeder tank has less floor space.
The 40 gallon breeder’s listed footprint is about 660 square inches, while the 100 × 50 cm minimum equals about 775 square inches.

Multiplied out, 36.19 × 18.25 inches comes to 660 sq in (4,261 cm²), about 85% of the 100 × 50 cm minimum PDSA uses. The 648 square inches quoted on many hamster pages is the tank’s nominal 36 × 18 inch size. Both numbers describe the outside of the tank, and the floor a hamster walks on sits inside the glass.

Before you buy: the box and the listing give outside measurements, and gallons describe water volume, which says nothing about floor size. Two tanks sold as 40 gallons can have very different bases.

Where UK welfare groups and US owners part ways

Germany’s veterinary welfare association, TVT, set the 100 × 50 cm figure, and PDSA adopts it while noting that there isn’t much evidence pinning down an exact size. Two more UK charities publish the same floor and add a height.

A search of US veterinary bodies turns up no published floor minimum for hamsters. When a US care page calls the 40 breeder “the minimum,” it is not quoting any standard in the table.

Floor space is identical across all three sources for every species. Height is where they split, and the longer history of where the 100 × 50 cm figure came from and which sources disagree with it covers the floor debate in depth.

Syrian, dwarf or Robo: the height and wheel test

A Roborovski and a Syrian get very different homes out of the same glass box. At 16.94 inches (43 cm) tall outside on Petco’s listing, the tank clears Woodgreen’s height for dwarf hamsters and Roborovskis and falls short for the two larger species.

A 12-inch wheel can fit in a 40 gallon breeder, but deep bedding and the mesh lid leave little vertical clearance for a Syrian hamster.

The wheel is the tighter fit. Syrian and Chinese hamsters need a 12-inch solid upright wheel, and the smaller species an 8-inch one (Woodgreen). A 12-inch wheel stands at least 12 inches tall before its base is counted, so in this tank it has to sit on the glass floor. Raised onto a platform above deep bedding, it would hit the lid.

An 8-inch wheel for a dwarf hamster leaves room to spare. For any species, a wheel fits when the hamster can run with a straight back and without lifting its head (Blue Cross), and which wheel diameter each hamster species needs walks through the check.

Female Syrians tend to be more active and may need a larger enclosure altogether (Woodgreen).

How much bedding a 40 breeder holds

Six inches across the whole floor comes to just under 4,000 cubic inches of bedding. The charities disagree on depth: Blue Cross asks for at least 20 cm (7.9 in) of digging bedding, PDSA for about 25 cm (10 in), and Woodgreen for at least 6 inches through most of the enclosure with a deeper digging area of 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm).

Taking the listed floor area as the most the inside can be, a full fill works out to:

  • 6 inches throughout: about 3,960 cubic inches, 2.3 cubic feet (65 liters)
  • 7.9 inches everywhere: about 5,200 cubic inches, 3.0 cubic feet (85 liters)
  • half the floor at 6 inches and half at 10: roughly 5,280 cubic inches, 3.1 cubic feet (87 liters)
  • 10 inches across the floor: about 6,600 cubic inches, 3.8 cubic feet (108 liters)

Bags are sold compressed, so match these totals to the expanded liters printed on the pack rather than the size of the bag on the shelf. Depth also uses up height. Ten inches of bedding in a tank 16.94 inches tall leaves under 7 inches to the rim before hides go in, which is why the deep digging end works best away from the wheel.

Mesh lid and a surface that takes the weight

Fit a mesh lid. Tanks suit hamsters because they hold deep bedding, but they still need mesh on top for ventilation, with gaps under 1 cm (0.4 in) so the hamster can’t squeeze out (Blue Cross). With four glass walls, the lid is the only airflow the tank has.

Note: covering the mesh with a towel or plastic to stop escapes blocks the only ventilation. Clip the lid down instead.

Weight catches owners out too. Petco’s listing gives no empty weight, so check the box before picking a shelf, and put the tank on a stand or a piece of furniture built to carry heavy glass plus several cubic feet of bedding.

Glass also traps heat beside a sunny window or a radiator. The warning signs, and how to bring a tank’s temperature down, are in what to do when a hamster is too hot in a glass tank.

Keep the tank or size up?

If your hamster is a dwarf species or a Roborovski, the tank with deep bedding, a solid wheel sized for the species and a mesh top misses the standards only on floor area. A Syrian or Chinese hamster loses out on more: the tank also runs short of height and leaves the larger wheel little clearance, so sizing up changes more for these two species.

A bigger gallon number doesn’t promise a bigger floor.

Floor figures are length × width from the listings, taken outside the glass.

A storage bin is usually the cheapest way to reach 100 × 50 cm in both directions, and how to build a hamster bin cage to 100 × 50 cm covers sizing and ventilation. Until the new home is ready, supervised time each day in a dry, empty bath lined with towels, or in a pop-up playpen, gives extra room to explore (Woodgreen).

Measure the inside of your tank tonight

A tape measure settles it in two minutes. Take the length and width along the floor inside the glass, multiply them, and set the answer against 775 square inches. Then measure from where the bedding surface will sit up to the lid, and hold that against the height your species needs. The method, including what to leave out of the count, is in how to measure hamster cage floor space.

Pairs and gerbils in this tank

Can two dwarf hamsters share one tank?

Every hamster species, dwarfs included, is safest housed alone; fights in captivity can cause severe injuries that can be fatal (Woodgreen). One hamster per tank.

Is the same tank big enough for gerbils?

Gerbils have their own space and company needs, covered in tank size for a pair of gerbils.
