Large hamster cages compared by inside floor space
Four large hamster cages with listed interiors run from 752 to 881 sq in, and all four have trays of 16 to 20 cm, short of PDSA’s 25 cm.

A large hamster cage needs at least 775 square inches (5,000 cm²) of floor inside the base. That is the 100 × 50 cm minimum set by Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare and adopted by PDSA. Two of the five big cages compared below are sold in 100 cm sizes and still list less than that inside, at 752 and 774 sq in.
The difference is the frame. A cage’s outside size includes walls and tray rims that a Syrian or a Roborovski can’t stand on, so the interior figure is the one to compare.
Two numbers decide whether a large cage is big enough
PDSA’s housing guidance sets out both. The first is a usable floor of at least 39.4 by 19.7 inches (100 by 50 cm). The second is a solid base deep enough to hold about 10 inches (25 cm) of bedding, so the hamster can burrow, sleep and store food.

Shelves and upper levels add nothing to the first figure. Only the ground floor counts.
Blue Cross uses the same minimum for every hamster species and asks for bar or mesh gaps narrower than 1 cm, about 0.39 inches (Blue Cross hamster care). Campbell’s, winter white, Roborovski and Chinese hamsters get the same floor and the same gap limit as a Syrian.
Minimums of 600 or 1,000 square inches that appear in shopping guides come from neither charity. The published hamster cage minimums, organization by organization, show where each figure originates and which ones are law rather than advice.
Large hamster cages by inside floor area
Read the third column first. It is the listed interior length multiplied by the width, and the outside size only tells you whether the cage fits your room.
| Cage | Outside → inside, as listed | Inside floor | Base or tray depth | Bar gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skyline Lima 100 | 39.4 × 23.6 → 38.6 × 22.8 in (100 × 60 → 98 × 58 cm) | 881 sq in (5,684 cm²) | 7.9 in (20 cm) | 0.28 in (7 mm) |
| Skyline Hoppelgarden 100 | 39.4 × 28.0 → 38.6 × 20.5 in (100 × 71 → 98 × 52 cm) | 790 sq in (5,096 cm²) | 7.5 in (19 cm) | 0.28 in (7 mm) |
| Skyline Barney | 39.4 × 22.0 → 37.8 × 20.5 in (100 × 56 → 96 × 52 cm) | 774 sq in (4,992 cm²) | 6.7 in (17 cm) | 0.28 in (7 mm) |
| Savic Hamster Plaza | 39.4 × 19.7 → 39.0 × 19.3 in (100 × 50 → 99 × 49 cm) | 752 sq in (4,851 cm²) | 6.3 in (16 cm) | 0.37 in (9.5 mm) |
| BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0, 120 cm | 47.2 × 23.6 in (120 × 60 cm) → not listed | under 1,116 sq in (7,200 cm² outside) | bedding up to 11 in (28 cm) | not listed |
Listings: Skyline Lima 100, Skyline Hoppelgarden 100, Skyline Barney, Savic Hamster Plaza, BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0, 120 cm. Floor areas are the listed interior length × width; square centimeters ÷ 6.4516 = square inches.
Two of the five clear the minimum on their own interior figures. The Lima 100 has about 106 sq in to spare.
Two of the Skyline cages come with extras on a second level: the Lima 100 with a platform and a ramp, and the Hoppelgarden 100 with two wooden platforms and two ladders. The floor figures above count the base alone.
Why a 100 × 50 cm label can still come up short
The Savic Hamster Plaza loses about 23 square inches to its own frame. It is listed at 100 by 50 cm outside, matching the minimum exactly, and at 99 by 49 cm inside. A centimeter gone from each dimension drops the floor to 752.

The Skyline Barney starts wider, at 100 by 56 cm. Its interior of 96 by 52 cm comes to 773.8 sq in, just over 1 square inch under the line.
On paper both miss the 5,000 cm² figure, and a cage that close to the line is worth checking with a tape on the day it arrives. The method for checking floor space inside the base, including tapered bins and curved corners, works the same way on a barred cage.
Which cages go well past 775 square inches?
In a 2007 study of 60 female golden hamsters, welfare appeared best in the largest of the four cage sizes, 1,550 sq in (10,000 cm²), and no larger size was tested. No cage in this comparison reaches that.
The largest listed interior
The Skyline Lima 100 tops the cages that publish interior sizes, at 38.6 by 22.8 inches (98 by 58 cm), or 881 sq in. Its tray is the deepest of the four barred cages at 7.9 inches (20 cm). Its interior height of 30.7 inches (78 cm) is well above the 12-inch (30 cm) wheel PDSA gives for a Syrian.
A 120 cm cage without a listed interior
The BUCATSTATE Hamster Cage 3.0 in its 120 cm size is listed at 120 by 60 by 62 cm, with a floor of about 0.72 m². That is the outside area, 1,116 sq in, and the listing gives no interior size.
The arithmetic still leaves a wide margin. The frame would have to be about 6.6 cm (2.6 in) thick on every side to pull the floor under 775. Its base is listed for up to 11 inches (28 cm) of bedding.
For a 75-gallon tank and options under $150, the cheap large hamster cages compared against the minimum cover the budget end.
Shallow trays under big floors
Each of the four barred cages in the table pairs a large floor with a tray of 6.3 to 7.9 inches (16 to 20 cm). That is short of the 25 cm (about 10 in) a solid base should hold, and bedding piled above a tray rim leans against bars instead of a wall.
Of the five listings, only the BUCATSTATE gives a base deeper than that. The page on how deep hamster bedding should be covers filling it and keeping tunnels from collapsing.
Bar gaps need the same scrutiny on cages sold for bigger animals. The Prevue 531, built for guinea pigs and dwarf rabbits, has 7/8-inch (2.2 cm) wire spacing, more than double the 1 cm limit for hamsters. Shop-sized cages are compared in whether pet-store hamster cages are big enough.
What should a listing tell you before you order?
One set of dimensions on a listing is the outside size, unless the seller says otherwise. Four figures settle the question:
- Inside length and width of the base. Multiply them; the line is 775 sq in, or 5,000 cm².
- Height of the solid base or tray, against about 10 inches (25 cm).
- Bar or vent gap, under 1 cm (0.39 in) for every species.
- Return terms, in case the delivered cage is smaller than the listing.
If any of the first three is missing, ask the seller in writing and keep the reply.
Before you buy: every listing in the table is from a European retailer, so confirm delivery to your country first. Several of these cages come in more than one length. The Skyline Lima is also sold as the Lima 80, whose 78 by 58 cm interior works out to 701 sq in.
Measure the spot the cage will stand on
Tape out 47.2 by 23.6 inches for a 120 cm cage, or 39.4 by 23.6 for the Lima 100, on the table or floor where the hamster will live. Then choose the largest cage in the table whose interior figure clears 775 and whose footprint fits inside your tape.
